Alumni Mentor Mark Fitzgibbons

I’ve spent the past 20 years creating images for great people. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that I’m that fortunate to have spent so much time doing some that I enjoy so much.

I live in Minnesota near Lake Superior and have a home based studio. After many years in a downtown retail location, I moved the studio to my dream location. I get to work and live at a great spot on a little river with all kinds of space to play.

When I’m not creating wedding, senior, family or commercial images, i spend as much time as possible with my two kids. Life is good.

My advice to attendees is to enjoy every minute of it. It’s a whirlwind and before you know it, you’re thinking about the next one. Make some new friends, learn as much as possible and share whatever you can.

How did you get started in the business? Who helped/guided/mentored you?
I got started in high school. Took a photography class and worked on the school paper. After that I always had a camera in my hand. Studied some in college, but really most of my education has come from some greatest photographers in the industry. Darton Drake, Fuzzy Duenkel and so many others.

Special message or advise for AD attendees?
My advice to attendees is to enjoy every minute of it. It’s a whirlwind and before you know it, you’re thinking about the next one. Make some new friends, learn as much as possible and share whatever you can.

How many After Dark’s have you attended? Favorite moment?
I have attended every After Dark. I really get stuck on favorite AD moment, because there have been so many. The whole Austin event. Dinner with everyone at the end of Miami. Shooting at 2 am in downtown Cincinnati and getting interviewed by the local news because they saw what was going on and thought it was so cool.

From Mark:
“When I was young, it was Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Alfred Stieglitz. Steve McCurry. As I started to study professionally… Fuzzy Duenkel, Darton Drake, Ken Sklute and Scott Dupras. Now… Dan Davis, Chuck Arlund, Travis Guggleman, Jen Hillenga and many others. Inspiration comes from various places… Music and musicians, various forms of art, nature and my little girl. Also, much inspiration from the person who made this whole thing possible, Dave Junion.
If you’re thinking about coming to another After Dark Event, remember there is so much too learn and only so much time. Even the most brilliant photographers can take something away from each event. Each AfterDark has new mentors and attendees that have so much to share, and each event is different and provides new inspiration. Different parts of the country to see and explore and new friends to be made. If you’ve never been to After Dark Before, spend a lot of time in the business pods. If you want to do this as a career, you need to become a good business person. ‘Set goals. Write them down and believe they will happen. Never give up. Smile, even when you don’t feel like it and you’ll see it’s effect on others, which will come right back to you. Give love and time and money and it will all come back to you.’
